What Is This California Wildlife Refuge?

Created in 1974, the San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge works to protect migratory birds, endangered species, and wetland habitats. Thanks to its prime location on the Pacific Flyway, this area protects the salt marsh harvest mouse and California Ridgeway’s rail while supporting the largest wintering population of canvasbacks on the U.S west coast. The refuge features a range of ecosystems, including mud flats, open bay/tidal marsh, and managed and seasonal wetland habitats.

A Guide to Activities to Check Out

Found along the north shore of San Pablo Bay, it only takes about 20 minutes to drive from our Sonoma Square hotel to the refuge. When planning your visit, there are several activities to choose from, all of which will have you experiencing the beauty of this area. Hunting is allowed within the refuge, but you must follow requirements and regulations.

Fishing

Due to its location, there are several places to fish from within the refuge in accordance with state and federal regulations. You can fish from sunrise to sunset in the open waters of San Pablo Bay and navigable sloughs, the Dickson Ranch Unit, and the Cullinan Ranch Unit. If you are fishing in either ranch unit, you can only use non-motorized crafts.
